5G Radiation Exposure and Your Health?

EMF Radiation has been a talking point in the news recently with cell phone companies racing to install 5G cell towers across the United States. The topic of EMF Radiation is driving concern among the general public about radiation exposure. Some common questions we hear include: Will 5G Cell Towers affect my health? Will I be exposed to more EMF radiation through 5G? What can I do to reduce my personal EMF radiation exposure? This article helps answer these questions and provides you the best practices to help reduce your exposure to EMF radiation.

What is EMF radiation?

It's important to understand what EMF radiation is and how best to avoid its potentially harmful effects. There are two types of EMF radiation that we may be exposed to.  The most common form of EMF radiation we encounter is non-ionizing radiation, also called low energy radiation. Appliances like microwave ovens, cellphones, Wi-Fi routers, as well as power lines and MRIs, send out low-level radiation. Higher energy radiation, or ionizing radiation, is the second type of radiation. Found in the higher end of the frequency spectrum, it has enough energy to knock electrons away from atoms and molecules which can damage or cause mutations in tissue and cells.  Most typical sources of ionizing radiation we encounter come from natural UV rays emitted by the sun, X-rays produced by medical imaging machines or artificially created UV light in tanning beds. Less common sources like lightning strikes and nuclear reactions emit a wide range of EM frequencies both in the ionizing and non-ionizing bands. Whether it be ionizing or nonionizing radiation, the general rule of thumb is that EMF radiation intensity decreases as you increase distance from the source of radiation. Below are lists of common items that emit low and high level radiation.

Non-ionizing radiation (Low Energy)

Microwave ovens

Computers

House energy meters

Wireless (Wi-Fi) routers

Cellphones

Bluetooth devices

Power lines

MRIs

      Ionizing radiation (High Energy)

      Sun

      Lightening

      Medical x-rays

      Gamma waves

      Nuclear explosions

      Tanning beds

Is 5G Radiation a Threat to my Health?

5G is a new standard in networking that will allow high speed wireless networking between devices.  The most common devices on these networks are likely to be cell phones, but the 5G specification allows for devices of all types to make use of these high speed networks.  5G networks will use a combination of smart antenna technologies, small distributed cell towers and higher frequencies to deliver radio signals capable of high speed data transfer.  Conventional antennas provide coverage similar to the way a floodlight illuminates a wide area. New 5G smart antennas can beam form radiation patterns which directs energy toward devices, acting much more like a flashlight when compared to the conventional flood light analogy. . These smart antennas increase network capacity and improve efficiency when delivering signals to devices.

      The Concern about Cancer?

While high energy ionizing radiation directly damages cells removing electrons from the atoms and molecules it encounters, lower energy non-ionizing radiation can still cause damage to living organisms by heating up and ultimately killing or mutating the tissues/cells that constitute them.  The controversy is less over 5G specifically but more so over the ever increasing EMF exposure we experience as new technologies continue to emerge.  A higher ambient level of RF energy exposure over time is correlated with higher rates of cancer and other chronic illness..  With 5G entering the scene as such a new technology, research on biological implications is still being conducted leading to uncertainty around eventual findings and wide speculation that 5G specifically increases our risk of cancer.  Until viable research is conducted and published, we recommend erroring on the side of caution and reducing your EMF exposure when possible.

      How to Protect Yourself

Limit your exposure- To reduce your exposure to ionized EMF energy, only receive X-ray exposure if it is medically necessary, limit sun exposure, always wear sunscreen and avoid excess use of tanning beds.  Protecting yourself from non-ionizing EMF energy is a bit more challenging due to the high signal environments most of us live and work in. Using the speaker function or wired earbuds in order to allow more distance between the device and your head is a good way of reducing exposure when in use.  When not in use but in standby, set your devices down rather than carrying them on you.  Leave your phone in another room when you sleep (this can also improve the quality of your sleep).  A sure fire way of shutting down all sources of EMF radiation produced by your devices is by putting them in an EDEC Faraday bag which will contain any signal coming from your device and prevent smart antennas (beam forming) from targeting you.  Sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date with the latest research as it comes available.  We’ll also share tips and tricks for improving your wellbeing though reduced EMF exposure.

OFF Grid Faraday Bag EMF Radiation Testing.

The best method to prevent low level EMF radiation in your household is to put your electronic devices in an Offgrid Bag. Offgrid Faraday bags are made out of faraday material, which is a combination of different metals like copper and nickel designed to block all signals and EMF radiation. You can measure EMF exposure with and without our Offgrid bags using a Tri Field EMF reader, which can be purchased on Amazon, in order to see the difference a bag can make. These readers show EMF radiation levels as demonstrated in the pictures below. You can clearly see that Offgrid are highly effective at blocking EMF Radiation.

        To Sum it All Up

We hope you gained a better understanding of what 5G is and how to reduce exposure to EMF radiation. Technology improves and enriches our lives everyday but it is also important to be aware of its effect on our health and wellbeing. At EDEC, we are committed to protecting both the health and privacy of our customers.
